about

The Progressors were a short-lived but highly influential band. Without The Progressors Black Market does not exist, and their influence on this collection is felt in all Black Market releases. I was lucky to play guitar with them in 2009 during a session recorded all to my Tascam 388 on 1/4'' reel to reel tape. The band had been recording in and around Atascadero, California with Brian Wallace (AKA Dub Robot), and managed to create a sound that was straight out of Black Ark.

This is an artifact, an essential group of recordings that gives a peek into what was a vibrant reggae community on The Central Coast of California at the time. Some of you will recognize Brandon 'Wise Owl' Niznik from The Next Dub, Twilight Zone, and also Dub Robot who has been featured on several Black Market EPs as well. At one point we were all together, in one small town, making reggae.

This was the first album I made on my Tascam 388, and sadly, it is also the last. I sold the 388 in Memphis behind Sun Studios to an awesome band that will do great things with it but before I did I discovered that I still had these tapes. I transferred everything and dubbed them out this month. If you want some essential, rare, dub-reggae cuts, this is the album for you.

The Progressors deserve to be heard loud and clear, and who can't hear will feel...

Don't sleep on this album, this one is near and dear to my heart. As always, LISTEN LOUD!

Black Market Dub Los Angeles, California

What would happen if The Beach Boys had The Wailers as their backing band instead of The Wrecking Crew? What if David Bowie spent the summer of 1975 in Kingston, Jamaica with King Tubby instead of Philidelphia? Michael Jackson meets Scratch Perry? These questions are the basic thesis of Black Market. Listen loud, dance, enjoy, and share. I make these albums for free but accept donations. ... more
